Burma army and KIA battle for second straight day in Shan state

Units from the Burma Army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) continued to clash Thursday morning, as fighting in the Pangsai (Kyukok) area of northern Shan state carried over for the second straight day.

China envoy pushes Kachin peace agreement during meeting with Burmese VP

The Chinese state owned Xinhua news agency reported earlier this week that during recent discussions between Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Burma's Vice President Nyan Tun in Naypyitaw the Chinese emissary advocated for a renewed Kachin ceasefire agreement between the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and Burma's central government.

KIO says 21 clashes have taken place since May agreement

Speaking to the AP news wire service via email, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) spokesman La Nan confirmed that 21 separate armed clashes between government troops and the KIO have taken place since both sides met for peace talks at the end of May, AP reported on Sunday.

Clashes between the Burma army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) broke out in the Bhamo district of southern Kachin state earlier this week.

Burma army takes post from KIO allied TNLA

On Tuesday June 18th a column of Burma army troops took control of a post manned by forces from the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) a group consisting of ethnic Ta'ang (or Palaung) who are allied with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), according to a KIA officer based in northern Shan state.

More than 100 villagers fled their homes in northern Shan state following heavy clashes between Burma army forces and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), according to local residents.

UN convoy reaches KIO controlled IDP camps

On Friday a UN aid convoy reached the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) controlled town of Mai Ja Yang, the first such UN aid convoy to reach the area since early July of last year. The aid convoy arrived some four months after the government's chief negotiator Aung Min announced that UN convoys would again be allowed to deliver supplies to IDP camps located along the China-Burma border in KIO territory.

More fighting between KIO and army in Shan state

Friday morning saw more clashes between forces loyal to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and the army break out in northern Shan state, according to a KIO official based in the area.

Clashes between KIO and Burma army continue in Shan state, despite 7 point agreement

Forces loyal to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and Burma's military clashed several times over the past week in northern Shan state according to KIO sources.  These are the first recorded clashes since the two sides met for peace talks late last month in the Kachin state capital Myitkyina.

In a press release issued late last week the Kachin Development Networking Group (KDNG) blasted the state owned Chinese firm behind the officially suspended Myitsone dam project, the China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) for what the group suggests is the company's ongoing efforts to misrepresent the views of thousands displaced villagers who were forced to leave their homes to make way for the dam.

Global day of Action for Kachin marks 2nd anniversary of conflict

Burma campaign groups and Kachin diaspora organizations around the world are participating in a global day of action today to mark the 2nd anniversary of the military's attack on the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), a conflict that has caused more than 100,000 people to flee their homes and resulted in the death of many civilians.

Thousands of Kachin women refugees displaced by fighting in northern Burma are at risk of trafficking and other forms of exploitation says a new report just released by the Kachin Women's Association of Thailand (KWAT).
