British minister calls for national ceasefire during Kachin visit

During a visit to Kachin state this week Britain's deputy foreign minister Hugo Swire called for peace. “It is tragic that this beautiful state today remains blighted by conflict. I urged all sides to build on the momentum in the peace process towards a nationwide ceasefire”, he said in a press release issued by the British government.

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) detained two Burma army officers and a soldier who were all wearing civilian clothes when they arrived at the Bang Hkam checkpoint near the Burma-China border in Kachin state on January 25, according to officials from the KIA's 3rd brigade.

Voters group urges Kachin parties cooperate
Residents of Kachin state's jade rich Hpakant region called on all of the existing Kachin political parties to cooperate during the upcoming 2015 national election. On Saturday January 25, officials from the Hpakant “people’s voice committee”, a group that represents over 30,000 Kachin voters in Hpakant township, met separately with the leaders of four Kachin political parties in Myitkyina, committee leader Lamawng La Tawng told the Kachin News Group.

In an interview with the Kachin News Group (KNG) this week, Dr. Manam Tu Ja, head of the Kachin State Democracy Party (KSDP) and former vice-president No. 2 of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), warned that the national census could destabilise Burma's peace process by causing further tensions.
