NLD opens official party office in Myitkyina

JUNE 1, THE OPENING CEREMONY OF NEW NLD OFFICE IN MYITKYINA.

MYITKYINA, Burma — Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party opened an official party office in Myitkyina, the capital of war-torn Kachin state, Burma’s most northernmost state.

The opening ceremony for the NLD office in Myitkyina was held in a venue located in Myo Thit Gyi quarter in the Kachin capital this morning, according to attendants.

Senior NLD members from Rangoon were joined by a crowd of approximately one-hundred local supporters who attended the ceremony.

Suu Kyi visited Myitkyina last February where she delivered a speech to a large crowd.

The NLD won 43 seats in the parliament during the April 1 by-elections.

However residents of Kachin state were prevented from voting after the government banned elections, citing security concerns.

The opening ceremony for the NLD office coincided with an informal peace talk between a government peace negotiating team led by Railways Minister Aung Mai and Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) delegation led by General Secretary Dr. Laja Mai Ja Yang, in Mai Ja Yang, the second largest town under Kachin Independence Army (KIA) control.
