The wind storm caused serious damage to structures at Bum Tsit Pa camp near Mai Ja Yang |
Last Friday afternoon a major wind storm damaged shelters in internally displaced persons camps located in the Mai Ja Yang area, controlled by the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO). Family shelters, latrines, meeting halls, a church and a school were seriously damaged at 4 different camps Nhkawng Pa, Bum Tsit Pa, Hka Hkye and Lana Zup Ja.
According to an email announcement distributed by Wunpawng Ninghtoi (WPN), the local NGO which provides relief to the camps, strong winds ripped off the roofs of dozens of buildings during the storm which lasted between 1:30 to 2:00 PM.
WPN's announcement also noted that the camps desperately need new roofing materials, nails, bamboo and other items to rebuild the damaged structures in the camps. The various camp committee met over the weekend to discuss how to rebuild the camps WPN's announcement said.
More than 10,000 people live in the camps located near Mai Ja Yang, which is the second largest town controlled by the KIO. The refugees come villagers which were overrun by government forces in 2011.
