Second round of UN aid reaches IDPs in Laiza

UN aid convoy arrived Laiza on Sept. 16.

Much needed basic food rations from United Nations aid groups has reached internally displaced people in Laiza, the capital and headquarters of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) near the China border in Burma’s northern Kachin state.

The 17-truck convoy arrived in Laiza on Monday from Kachin state capital Myitkyina in only the second round of deliveries since December 2011. Rations are being distributed to three IDP camps around Laiza - Je Yang, Laiza No. 3 and Woichyai - as well as to several IDP schools, according to representatives of IDP relief groups based in Laiza.

The first convoy arrived in Laiza on September 7.

Each household is provided rations of food, nutrition packs, kitchen kits and home construction tools, said a KIO officer assisting the UN aid delivery. Those who live in the camps say that each person receives 13.5 Kilo of rice, 1.8 Kilo of split chickpea, 0.9 Kilo of oil, 0.15 Kilo of salt and 1.9 Kilo of nutrition cream, an amount estimated to last one month, but future deliveries are as yet unassured.

Daw Sai Sai of the World Food Programme told Kachin News Group, “Now rations have been distributed to three camps.  For Hpunglum Yang camp, we plan to return next week for a third round.” Ms. Sai Sai added that it is uncertain whether UN aid will continue in Laiza after the third round is completed.

The aid was provided by UN organizations including World Food Program (WFP), UNHCR, OCHA, UNICEP and two international non-governmental organizations--- MSF and ACTED.

There are now more than 18,000 IDPs living in four camps around Laiza, relying largely on support from churches and donations made by individuals and organizations, according to the KIO Refugee and IDP Relief Committee (RIRC) based in Laiza.

The UN support promptly followed a visit by Mr. Vijay Nambiar - the UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to Burma - on August 28, though a commitment to continued support has not been made.
