Maj-Gen Sumlut Gun Maw, Vice Chief of Staff of KIA took press conference at Rangoon on Nov. 18. |
High ranking Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) leader Major General Sumlut Gun Maw will arrive in Chiang Mai later today to attend further talks between the government and Burma’s rebel groups. Representatives of at least 11 Burmese political parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD) are also expected to attend the talks which are being organized by the government controlled Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).
Earlier this week Gun Maw was in Rangoon where he addressed a large audience of Kachin at a Baptist church. During his speech Gun Maw reiterated his call for a true and lasting peace process. “To those making efforts for peace, I urge them not to exchange peace for car permits,” Gun Maw told the audience.
An apparent reference to the fact that several other prominent rebel groups have signed ceasefire agreements with the government in exchange for lucrative car import permits.
In addition to the NLD, 10 other parties are set to attend the talks they include the Shan National League for Democracy, the Shan Nationalities Development Party, the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party, the Chin Development Party, the Chin National Party, the Karen People’s Party, the National Democratic Force, the Union and Diversity Party, the Democratic Party (Myanmar), and the Democracy and Peace Party.
The NLD’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi is not expected to attend the talks.
