As fighting between Burmese government forces and troops loyal to the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) intensifies across Kachin and parts of northern Shan state, representatives from both sides met this week in Myitkyina, the Kachin state capital.

The two-day meeting which finished on Tuesday saw members of the KIO's technical advisory team led by Gawlu La Awng sit down with the government's peace negotiating team led by Hla Maung Shwe, a prominent Burmese businessman who serves as senior representative of the government run Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).

The main item of discussion was future talks set to be held in October between more senior representatives of the KIO and the government's chief negotiator Aung Min. According to Lamai Gum Ja, a member of the Myitkyina based Kachin Peace-talk Creation Group (a group of prominent Kachin businessman involved in the peace process) the upcoming talks are tentatively set to begin on October 5th but this needs to be confirmed by both sides.

The just concluded talks also covered ways the government and the KIO can reduce tensions and help those displaced by the conflict, Lamai Gum Ja added.

In the days before the two sides met in Myitkyina heavy fighting took place across Kachin state, including in Machyangbaw township in northern Putao district. Fighting also took recently in Sumprabum and Manje (or Mansi) townships as well as near Chipwe in along the China Burma border. Clashes also broke out in northern Shan state in parts of Muse and Mungji (Mongsi) townships.

Sumlut Gam, a senior member of the KIO's negotiating team who is currently based in Laiza, recently told Kachin News Group that the recent upsurge in fighting is the fault of Naypyidaw. The military and the government have not followed the 7-point agreement reached with the KIO at the end of May, Sumlut Gam said.
