Earthquake destroys buildings near Indawgyi Lake

A powerful earthquake destroyed a Baptist Church and homes near Indawgyi Lake (also known as Nawnglut) located in the western part of Mogaung Township.

The earthquake, which happened at around 8:40 am on July 22, lasted for about 5 seconds.

Now that the church has been destroyed worshippers are unable to attend Sunday church services.

According to a resident, church services are being conducted in the village hall until the church can be repaired or another building is constructed.

The exact number of homes damaged by the earthquake is still unknown.

There are about 81 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are still taking refuge in the compound of the Baptist Church.

Earthquakes are common in Kachin State. There are several fault lines in Burma’s north westernmost state.
