Kachins in Malaysia protest military offensive in Kachin state

Kachins in Malaysia are protesting against the military offensive launched by the Burmese Army on the Kachin Independence Organization/Army (KIO/A). Demonstrations were held in Kuala Lumpur on June 24, Friday in front of the Myanmar Embassy office.

The protestors demanded a stop to the military offensive started on June 9 and withdrawal of military reinforcements in Kachin State, said a source who participated in the protests.

“We are protesting because our people are being abused,” said Lama Zau Bawk.

Initially around 50 people were supposed to attend but later the number of protestors went up to nearly 400 and Malaysia authorities forbade demonstrations in front of the Myanmar Embassy office after that.

In Malaysia there are over 5,000 Kachin and this is one of the largest protests.
