Refugee students in Laiza in a spot

Kachin refugees students, who fled to Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), headquarters in Laiza on the China border will get a chance to continue their education but are faced with a lack of materials for studying, said a teacher.

“We have enough chalk but no note books and use a few note books carefully. There is no writing material so the teachers were forced to tell the students to memorize lessons,” said a resident of Laiza.

Refugee camps in Laiza house about 412 students and 180 students in Lawa Yang School and Mai Sak Pa School are from the Burmese army controlled area.

Kachin refugees who recently arrived in KIO Laiza headquarters, eastern Kachin State.



All refugee students are attending Laiza High school, Middle School and Missionary School in the morning and evening sessions.

Under the KIO schools were closed from June 14 for six days. Later the Education Department decided to reopen the schools. However the High School of KIA brigade 3 based in Maijayang is still closed.

“Discussions with the central office will be held on June 25 to decide whether Maijayang High School will be reopened or not,” said a member of the Kachin Light (WPN).

The authorities helping students are now trying to invite donors to donate school kits. They plan to submit a report about the situation.
