Eight Burmese soldiers killed, three injured in fighting with the KIA

A KIA soldier takes position near Burmese frontline-base at Munglai Hka river bridge in Lajayang village on Myitkyina-Bhamo road.

Eight Burmese soldiers were killed and three injured during fighting Tuesday with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) at three different areas in Kachin State, said KIA officers at the frontlines.

Two Burmese soldiers were killed and three injured in the KIA attack at Loimawk Yang, near Laiza-Manmaw (Bhamo) Road, KIA officers said.

The short battle happened when KIA soldiers, under Brigade 5, attacked government troops from Infantry Battalion No. 29, based in Myitkyina, at Loimawk Yang, said officers.

During the fighting, Major Win Naing, Vice-battalion Commander of IB 29, and the remaining troops stationed at Lajayang frontline base, fired several 81 mm mortar rounds into the area.  However, at least two mortar rounds did not reach their targets and fell on Dung Hung Village, according to villagers.

Two government soldiers were killed at Hkalung Krung, near the Taping (Dapein) hydropower dams in N’Mawk (Momauk) Township, in eastern Manmaw District, during fighting with KIA Battalion 15 at about 2 p.m. local time, said KIA officers of the battalion.

Four more Burmese soldiers from the Sinbo-based Infantry Battalion No. 141 died during skirmishes with KIA troops under Brigade 5 on Monday and Tuesday at Ja Ing Yang Village, near Nam San Yang Village, on the Myitkyina-Manmaw Road, said KIA officers from Brigade 5.

Several government troops were also injured in short military clashes in the last two days, added KIA officers.

Yesterday, the government controlled New Light of Myanmar Newspaper published that internal factions had grown within the KIA between pro- and anti-peace groups.  It reported a KIA soldier was killed and a senior officer injured during a shoot-out during a meeting at the Laiza Headquarters on Sept. 1.

The government news was completely rejected Tuesday by Brig-Gen Gun Maw, Vice Chief of Staff of the KIA.
