Wounded Lajaw Naw (left) and his wife Loilam Lu before the couple was hospitalized to Kamaing. |
Lajaw Naw and his wife, Loilam Lu, are residents of Sahtu Zup, on Stilwell (Ledo) Road.
The couple was seriously injured in the mine explosion at about 10 a.m. local time, near the mountain cross of the village’s Roman Catholic Church while they were taking bamboo from the nearby forest, said villagers.
Villagers told the Kachin News Group, the mine was planted by the Burma Army’s Infantry Battalion No. 297 under Myitkyina-based Northern Regional Command, based in the village.
The wounded couple has been moved from Kamaing Hospital to Myitkyina Public Hospital, sources close to the victims said.
The Burmese Army has not claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Several dozen civilians have been killed or injured in Kachin State by mines planted by both the Burma Army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) since the civil war started on June 9.
