Peace marchers reach Laiza

Peace marchers reached in KIO's capital Laiza on March 13.

A group of Kachin activists and monks marching for peace reached the Kachin Independence Organization's (KIO) defacto capital Laiza on Wednesday night. The group made up of more than 50 people from Myingyan township in Mandalay division received a hero's welcome when they arrived in the besieged town.

Earlier on in the week the marchers were stopped by government troops at Lajayan who claimed the road was too dangerous. The group was eventually allowed to proceed after negotiations took place. Located just outside of Laiza, Lajayan saw some of the heaviest fighting of the Kachin conflict so far take place in December and January.

Surrounded on three sides by government troops Laiza is currently home to more than 25,000 internally displaced people.
