Speaker Shwe Mann's visits Kachin refugee camps

Shwe Mann
Retired General Shwe Mann, the speaker of Burma's lower house of parliament, visited refugee camps in Kachin state on Sunday.  According to a report in Weekly Eleven, Shwe Mann met with internally displaced people in the Myitkyina area to discuss their situation.

The Weekly Elven story reported that during his visit Shwe Mann emphasized that all people in Kachin state “need to cooperate in the peace process”.

Shwe Mann also traveled to Putao and Mohnyin over the weekend. He was joined on his tour by fellow MPs Aye Myint and Thein Zaw.  Lt-Gen Myint Soe, a senior official from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army also took part in the visit.

Shwe Mann is considered by many to be the leading contender to replace Burma's President Thein Sein should the latter choose not to run for office in 2015. Shwe Mann was for many years the third ranking general in Than Shwe's military regime.
